Epidural Steroid Injections
WHAT IS AN EPIDURAL STEROID INJECTION?
-
Epidural steroid injections deliver medication into the epidural space around your spinal cord to reduce inflammation, nerve irritation, and pain.
-
These injections can provide reliable pain relief for conditions like herniated discs, spinal stenosis, arthritis, and other causes of chronic back pain and lumbar radiculopathy.
-
Performed in our office or an outpatient clinic setting, epidural injections use imaging guidance to place the needle in exactly the right position, followed by recovery and potential physical therapy for long-term results.
-
At Louisiana Spine & Pain Institute, we specialize in advanced treatments like epidural injections to help you find relief from pain and get back to living your life.
HOW ARE EPIDURAL INJECTIONS PERFORMED?
-
Epidural steroid injections are performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthetics to numb the injection site, sometimes accompanied by light sedation to help the patient relax. The injection site is carefully cleansed, and then the needle is inserted into the epidural space using a special x-ray to guide its placement.
-
Once the needle is properly positioned, the medication is injected, and the needle is removed. A small bandage will be placed over the injection site, and patients will spend a brief period of time in a recovery area before being discharged. Most patients can resume their regular activities the next day, with relief of symptoms occurring from one to three days after the procedure.
