What are Epidural Steroid Injections?
An Epidural Steroid Injection (ESI) is a non-surgical treatment that uses a combination of a corticosteroid and a local anesthetic to help reduce pain. By decreasing inflammation and swelling, the injection can relieve pressure on irritated nerves and ease discomfort. ESIs are commonly used to treat pain caused by inflammation in the lower back, legs, neck, or arms and are administered into the space surrounding the spinal cord and nerve roots.

Epidural Steroid Injection Treatments
Before the procedure, you’ll have the opportunity to speak with a member of our clinical team to review the process and ask any questions. You will then sign a consent form.
During the procedure, you’ll lie comfortably on a treatment table while the injection area is carefully cleaned and sterilized. Using real-time imaging guidance (fluoroscopy), your physician will precisely guide the needle to the appropriate area of the spine. A local anesthetic is used to help minimize discomfort before the medication is delivered into the epidural space surrounding the spinal nerves.
Some patients may experience pressure or brief discomfort during the injection. If you feel pain at any point, let your physician know so adjustments can be made. The procedure typically takes 20–30 minutes to complete.
Afterward, the needle is removed, a small bandage is applied, and you’ll rest briefly in a recovery area. You will receive detailed discharge instructions and must have a responsible adult drive you home.
What to Expect During Your Procedure
